El pasado sábado tuve la oportunidad de impartir mi primer taller de caligrafía. En la hermosa e iluminada aula de Rie.com.do, junto a 12 personas, pasamos 6 riquísimas horas aprendiendo sobre plumas, papel, tinta y técnicas de escritura en el estilo de la caligrafía moderna.
Last saturday, I had the opportunity to teach my first calligraphy workshop. With 12 students at Rie’s bright and lovely classroom, we spent 6 hours learning about nibs, paper and ink, focusing on the modern calligraphy style.

Esta es mi punta caligráfica gigante, que utilicé para explicar como funcionan y como debía ser utilizada para escribir. El correcto ángulo, la presión y dirección en que se mueve la pluma es lo que logra las hermosas y uniformes lineas finas y gruesas que caracterizan la caligrafía.
I built a giant version of a calligraphy nib, to explain how it worked and how it should be used for writing. Using the right angle, with the right pressure and in the right direction is what will help you achieve those beautiful thin and thick strokes that define calligraphy.

Me encantó poder compartir con mi clase, este proyecto caligráfico que mi abuela hizo en los años 40’s mientras estaba interna en el colegio de señoritas “Santo Domingo”, un colegio de monjas católicas de los Estados Unidos, que incluía en su pensum, clases de lettering. Es una joya en mi familia y fue un excelente ejemplo para hablar de la debatida diferencia entre caligrafía y lettering.
I loved sharing with my class, this calligraphy project, made by my grandmother in the 40’s. She attended the all-girls boarding school “Santo Domingo”, which was ran by catholic nuns from the United States, and that included in their curriculum Lettering classes. It is a family jewel and it was a great example to approach the very debated difference between lettering and calligraphy.

Este ejercicio, diseñado con la ilustración del romero que me hizo MamilaBella, consistía en escribir entre las hojas, como si las letras estuvieran entrelazadas con ellas. Aquí el resultado del de Mr.Pichon
I took one of MamilaBella’s rosemary’s illustrations and used them for this lovely assignment. Each student had to write in between the little leafs as if the letters were interlaced with them. This was Mr.Pichon’s result.
