Mi amiga y organizadora de bodas Ambar Luna se casó hace ya casi 3 años. Desde el pasado año he estado trabajando con alguna de sus novias, y recientemente me pidió que diseñara un monograma para ella.
My friend and wedding planner Ambar Luna, got married almost 3 years ago. I’ve been working on invitations for some of her brides since last year, and she recently asked if I could design a monogram of her own. 
Comenzó así:
Después de muchos bocetos, terminé eligiendo este. Hablo en primera persona, porque ella me dio la libertad de diseñar lo que quisiera (algo muy raro cuando se trabaja con clientes que tienen ideas muy específicas de lo que quieren), y éste me parecía que iría muy bien en bordados o sellos (y qué perfecto que el apellido de su esposo inicia con la O, aunque ella no estuviese segura de querer usar 3 letras).
It started like this: 
After several sketches, I ended up picking this one. I say “I” because she gave me freedom to design at will (something you don’t always get to do when clients have a specific idea of what they want), and this one I felt could work on embroidery and stamps (how perfect it was that her hubby’s last name’s initial is a O, even though she wasn’t sure if she wanted to use 3 letters).

Lo re-dibujé digital, y lo dejé tranquilo en mi computadora durante varias semanas (no había prisa). Volví a abrirlo hace unos días y sentía que daba para más… estaba bien para bordado, ya que se necesitan lineas limpias para esto, pero yo sentía que todavía podía ser más romántico.
I re-drew it digitally, and let it sit on my computer for weeks (there was no rush). I came back to it a few days ago and felt like it could be more… it was ok for embroidery (for you need clean lines for that), but I needed it to be more romantic. 

Por la experiencia de mi boda, y diseñar todas las piezas incluyendo mi monograma, se que algo como est0, puede cansarte si no estás 100% enamorada de ello. Hay que pensar que este diseño puede acompañarte por muchos años, en tarjetas, servilletas, toallas, sellos, o hasta en la puerta de tu casa (como estos hermosísimas trabajadas en hierro que vi en Basel hace unos meses). 
Judging by my wedding’s experience, where I designed everything including our monogram, I know that you can grow tired of something like this if you are not 100% in love with it. You must think that this design will be with you for years in cards, napkins, towels, stamps or even in your front door (like this lovely work on these I found in Basel a few months ago). 

Entonces pensando a largo plazo en el diseño de Ambar decidí hacerlo más clásico y romántico: Fui poseída por mi mamá y su amado art nouveau, e imprimí lo que tenía digital, lo calqué y comencé a dibujar de nuevo.
So, thinking how Ambar’s design had to work long-term, I decided to make it more classic and romantic: I was possessed by my art nouveau-loving mom’s energy and printed out the digital version; traced it, and started drawing again.

Aunque me considero una diseñadora técnica (y a veces medio cuadrada), que disfruta lo limpio y detallado de las lineas vectoriales, aprecio también el “accidente” en los diseños manuales. Es lo que me encanta del lettering y la caligrafía, y exactamente lo que sentía que le faltaba a esto.
Although I’m a technical (and sometime square-thinking) designer, who enjoys clean and crisp vectored lines, I appreciate the “accident” in hand drawn designs. It’s what I love about lettering and calligraphy, and what I felt this was missing.

Las lineas ahora tienen diferentes grosores, y se pueden ver pequeños errores en la simetría. Esta es la versión humana del monograma de Ambar, y me encanta <3. Podría seguir cambiando detallitos o haciendo nuevos a partir del mismo layout… pero nunca acabaría 😛
The lines were now not all the same in width, and you can see some mistakes on its symmetry. This is the “human” version of Ambar’s monogram, and I love it ❤ . I could keep changing little details or making new ones starting from this same layout… this could take forever 😛 

Al final, ajusté de manera digital la linea gruesa que se veía a la derecha de la O. Esta es la versión terminada. Espero que ella encuentre qué hacer con él. 😀
At the end, I had to digitally tweak the thick line on the right side of the O. This is the finished version. I hope she finds what to do with it. 😀
